In Autumn of 1980, Harve Bennett (pictured above on the set of The Six Million Dollar Man) had been hired by Paramount Pictures to produce the sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, tentatively entitled Star Trek: The Movie II. The first piece of correspondence related to the production was a memo he sent to Gary Nardino, the president of Paramount Television. It read as follows:
November 13, 1980
Per your request, I am enclosing my first thumbnail sketch of the story I have proposed for the next Star Trek feature. Though brief, I think it includes all areas I feel essential to this project.
While War of the Generations was only the beginning and would be heavily revised, it was an auspicious, character-driven start for the second movie’s production.
