S5Ep3 “Extreme Risk” you guys remember that Friendly brand craft plastic that people made earrings & stuff with in the late 80s/early 90s? Pretty sure that’s what B’Elanna’s suit is covered in. It actually looks pretty cool. I like this episode but it really seems like you shouldn’t be able to override the holodeck safety protocols quite so easily. In TNG Data needed Georgi to override them when he was trying to recreate the Borg anger scenario. Maybe on Voyager you just have to be a lieutenant? That seems pretty dangerous. Maybe require a password or at least set it up so someone gets an email if someone uses that setting. Whatever. I guess I’m not here to tell Janeway how to run her ship¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But I think this episode is weird but in many ways ahead of it’s time in terms of portraying mental health issues in a constructive way. Of course it is a problem still easily overcome in 45 minutes but the fact that her turmoil is in reaction to something in an earlier episode shows they were trying. TV was different then. Sometimes I wonder what TNG/DS9/VOY would have been like if they were produced now in this new golden age of scripted tv. They were so technically & narratively progressive in so many ways, but imagine how we could have explored these characters and places with the kind of long term character/story arcs that good sci-fi tv has these days. Regardless they did a hell of a job and made some great tv. Roxanne Dawson does a great job with some tough stuff.
